India at a Glance -The Booming outsourcing Industry- -Population and the educated youth-Call Centers the lucrative profession-Call centers status and Growth

India the largest democratic republic of the world occupying a large portion of South Asia has a large coastline. The country is one of the fast developing nations of the world is on the threshold of development in all spheres during the recent past. This former colony of British Empire has a population of more than 1.1 billion people gained independence in 1947.

The country is considered as an emerging global power has been opening its doors for free trade since nineties. India with its diverse culture and multi lingual state uses both Hindi and English as official Languages though the former is recognized as the national language. As a result of the 200 years of colonial rule by the British Empire, English has become a common language especially connecting the South and North.

The English language is still used as a medium of instruction in many of the schools and majority of the educated population speak English. This the major reason for the country’s rapid progress in the outsourcing industries especially. call centers that require a good command over English more than any other skill. Compared to the south east nations of Taiwan, Singapore and China that concentrated on the outsourcing jobs of electronic and digital sectors India became one of the sought after destinations in the software and call center outsourcing industries. The countries of south East Asian nations were not able to compete with this country mainly because of the poor command over English.

Realizing the potential of the educated millions the outsourcing industry exploited the language skills of the new generation to effectively use in the call centers. The ever-increasing population of the country and the alarming unemployment of the educated youth helped the country in carving a niche in the call centre industry for the last one and a half decade. Comparatively lesser wages sought by the educated unemployed made the job of the outsourced companies easier. The average salary of an employee working in a call center in India is nothing more than $350 compared to the $1500-1750 being paid in other developing countries.

Most of the metropolitan cities of the country besides the fast developing city of Bangalore and Pune has since been emerged as the BPO centers of this country during the past 15 yrs. Various multinational companies of Europe and north America has setup their own outsourcing call centers in many of these towns.

Unlike USA and Canada the call centers that employ high school graduates the call centers in India employs graduates from universities obviously due to the low wages prevailing in the country. The proliferation and expansion of call centers in the major cities has become a boon for the educated millions of India who could make 15000 to 20,000 rupees per month a distant dream a few years back. The industry is fast developing and is likely to provide vast job opportunities for the job hungry youths of India in the days to come.
